Fear Week: Ghosts

Are you scared of ghosts? Feeling the fear yet?

From the corner of your eye, you catch movement.  Is something there?  No.  Must be a shadow from the television.  It’s just your imagination.

A floorboard creaks.  A door slams shut.  Lights flicker.  The wind - I hope it was wind - howls and moans.  Despite the room’s warmth, a cold, hollow chill sweeps over you.  There goes that “shadow” in your peripheral vision again.

Fear Week continues.

Why do we fear ghosts?

As children, we’re told ghost stories around campfires.  Maybe our older sibling, if we have one, tells us how they saw a ghost outside the window or that the house is haunted.  Perhaps we snuck downstairs when we were supposed to be asleep and saw the scary movie our parents were watching.

Or maybe we had a more personal experience with ghosts; a reason to feel that fear. Continue Reading »

Fear Week: Vampires

Do you fear the vampire? It’s dark.  You think their are footsteps on the pavement behind you yet there’s nothing there each time you turn.  If you can just make it home before…There it was again.

Your house.  Finally.  Safety is now within your reach.

What was that?  You heard that, right?

Trembling hands make the keys slip from your fingers.  Calm down, you tell yourself.  There’s nothing to fear.  Unlock the door, go inside, bolt the lock…And then the gleaming red eyes of the vampire are only inches from your own…

Fear Week continues.

Why do we fear the vampire?

Okay, so I know most of us here don’t fear vampires and quite frankly, I can’t imagine fearing a real vampire.  Perhaps I would feel differently on that point were I dealing with a rogue real vampire who refused to follow the guidelines found within the Black Veil (we’ll get to that soon, I promise).  For the purposes of this discussion let’s set aside reality and deal only with mythical vampires.  You know, Dracula, Lestat, Edward Cullen…(I’ll wait while all the fan girls in the world stop screaming) Continue Reading »

Fear Week: 2012

On December 21, 2012, where will you turn to ease your fear?It gets closer with each passing stroke of the clock.  You can’t stop it.  You can’t change it.  We’re all going to die.  Tick tock.  We know that.  Tick tock.  But now we know the exact date of our demise.  Tick tock.

December 21, 2012.

Tick tock.

Fear Week continues…

Why do we fear 2012?

Unless you’ve been living under a rock away from all forms of media, you’ve probably heard about the doomsday that is 2012.  It masquerades under a number of conspiracy theory monikers: The 2012 Enigma, Esoteric Agenda, Rothschild Conspiracy, Planet X, The Galactic Alignment, The End of the Mayan Calendar, etc, etc, etc…If you’re in a state of confuzzlement over any of that, I’ll give you the Cliff’s Notes version. Hey Jerk! I Hope You Die!

Published by Dark Passenger under W T F? Edit This

If it makes no sense, it must be WTF Wednesday…Okay, so maybe I don’t actually want people to die because I’m not that vindictive.  Maybe that should have been, “Hey jerk!  I hope your blog dies a slow and painful death!”  or “I wish you’d take a long walk off a short Internet bridge because I hate you!” or even “I hope hackers destroy you!”  So no, real death is bad in my book, but Internet death?  Hmm…that’s something I can behind right now.

And since this is my blog, I get to tell you all about it.  (Reader discretion is advised.  I can’t promise profanity won’t come out in the middle of the rant, but I’ll do my best to self-bleep out the worst of if.)

I’ve become increasingly frustrated with bloggers as the days go on lately.  And what do I do when I’m pissed off, dark passengers?  I get quiet, I observe, I draw conclusions…And then I blast the hell out of those who deserve it.   Please know I’m not naming names so none of y’all reading should feel attacked in any way; however, you start to feel defensive at any point then perhaps you should take a long, hard, HONEST look at your blog - and yourself.

Fear Week: Dying Alone

Published by Dark Passenger under Darkives Edit This

You have it all now but could you end up alone and on the street? You take a moment out of hectic day to realize how blessed your are for all you have.  It would devastate you to lose even a piece of it.  Wait.  What would you do if something happened to change things?  Without warning, you imagine what it would be like to lose everything you love.  That’s when the cold claw of fear finds it’s way down your spine.  What if everything in your life was taken from you and you had to become a bag lady on the street, destitute and dying alone?

Fear Week continues.

Why Do We Fear Dying Alone?

You have everything - the adoring family, the perfect job, a life envied by others - but what would it take to bring it all crashing down around you?  Getting called into your boss’s office to find out about job cuts?  A phone call from the doctor with devastating news?  Finding out your business partner has been less than honest with their accounting practices and your business is gone?  Suddenly where to vacation takes a back seat to wondering if you’ll end up dying alone.

I’ll go ahead and admit I have this fear on a regular basis for no real reason.  I’ve often wondered if it’s a “woman thing” to worry about this because hubby doesn’t seem all that concerned about it.  As soon as there’s any sort of financial snag in the fabric of our life, my mind begins to spiral out of control.  It starts with me wondering if a bill will be paid on time and morphs into the mortgage going into foreclosure.  Suddenly, I’m living in a cardboard box on the street.  The next thing I know, I’m begging for a change in alley and dying of, I don’t know, being cold and alone.  It doesn’t have to make sense.

That’s not really the point of fear, is it?

Last night, we opened Fear Week by discussing Primal Fear and how it was something within our DNA rather than a learned behavior.  I believe the fear of dying alone is the same thing.  It’s not as though this is a learned behavior.  I don’t personally know people who missed one credit card payment and magically ended up dying alone in a cardboard box on the street.  Yet I fear this, all the way down to the very depths of my being.

Honestly, I think it’s part of the human psyche to crave the company and compassion of others.  People are made to be with other people - but don’t get me wrong, I do love my quiet times.  Perhaps what we’re really discovering during Fear Week is that the major fears we have aren’t learned behaviors and they don’t make us crazy; we’re born with them.  They’re in our blood.

Hmm…Did that make you feel any better?  Me either.  Understanding the root of my fear does very little to help me overcome it.  It’s still there.  The bag lady within is still whispering in the back of brain how she’ll see me soon.  (Creepy much?  I know.)

Don’t forget to check out No Fear Week over on The Stiletto Philosopher this week as I discuss how to beat these fears into submission, much as I did the spider I discussed last night.  Tonight I’ll be discussing how to overcome the fear of dying alone.
