Dancing to Weight Loss
What’s up, yo? Dark Passenger Jen in the house!
Ahem…sorry. Welcome to an energizing Talk to Me Tuesday. As y’all might recall from last week, I was discussing my food addiction/perceived weight issues. I’ll get back into that later this evening, but first I want to get into the hyper positive way I’m going to combat my dark passenger’s desire to keep me fluffy.
Yes, you heard me correctly. Whenever I’m in a positive frame of mind, I refer to myself as fluffy as opposed to fat. Of course, I’ll also talk about how I still have six pack abs, you just can’t see them because of the protective coating (fat) I’ve formed over them to keep them from getting damaged. So…yeah…take anything Positive Jen says with a grain of salt - and some fries. (Yeppers…Me hungry.)
Anyway…anyone who knows me knows that I’m completely in love with the Fox show ‘So You Think You Can Dance’ because it’s the one chance I get each year to turn into a professional dance judge on my couch. (Just like I become a diving expert during the Summer Olympics and critique how their splash looked.) Y’all may also remember that I’m a big-time insomniac so I’m regularly up during infomercial time. (I know…don’t say it. You know where I’m going.) In the wee hours of New Years’ Morning there was one for Core Rhythms. It wasn’t the first time I’d seen the infomercial, but it was hubby’s first time. Maybe he was really tired, but he said I should get it and try it since I love to dance.
So I did.
For those of you who’ve never heard of this one, it was created by some professional ballroom dancers and uses moves from certain styles of dance - Rumba, Merengue, Samba and Swing - to tone the core and promote a weight loss. I won’t lie; I was beyond skeptical that it would be much of a workout for me, but I’ve committed to using these bad boys so I started this morning. Yeah, I was wrong.
I popped in the first DVD that’s in 3 10-minute parts to teach you the basic moves for each dance and decided it would be no problem to do this in my pajamas. Seriously, how difficult could it be to learn basic dance moves when you already know how to dance. (Not that Jazz/Hip Hop is the same thing as Latin dance, but whatever.) By the end of the first section that was teaching basic core movements I decided I needed to go change into workout clothes. When the second section was done teaching me how to move while doing the core movements, I realized it was time to get something to pull my hair back. (Nothing worse then sweat-tipped hair flying in your face.) Now that I’ve completed the third section where I’ve learned to dance while engaging the core muscles, I think I’ve had enough for one morning.
And maybe I should try wearing shoes next time as well…
What? I dance barefoot.
My dance workout has been over for nearly a half hour and I’m still a little out of breath. My heart’s still racing a little bit, but it’s heard to know if that’s from the dancing or because it just does that. (I’ll get into that in this evening’s blog.) And if that’s not the sign of a workout then how about the fact that I can actually feel the muscles I forgot I had in my lower back, abs, hips and butt? I can only imagine how I’m going to be feeling when I take on the DVDs that feature 45 solid minutes of dancing.
So here’s the goal, y’all. 16 pounds. Why that goal? Because it’s 10% of my total total body weight. (You can do the math if you must; I’m not gonna say it because I already know it.) 10% seems to be the universally accepted weight loss goal so I’ll go with that - for now. I’m also supposed to record my inches in various areas prior to beginning the DVDs - oops! - so I guess I’ll have hubby help me get those tonight. I’ve got no idea what to expect there, really, so we’ll just have to see how that goes.
This is Day 1. Eight weeks of weight loss starts today!
…well…eight weeks of working out, at least. Let’s not get crazy with this. I mean, I just made brownies last night so I can hardly be expected to start eating better today, now can I?
Is anyone else out there working on a healthier lifestyle right now? I want to know what you’re doing and how it’s working. Talk to me, peeps!!!

“Let your dark passenger come out to play (or dance)…Be your own nemesis!”

I can think of a better idea to lose weight. Starve the dog and run around the garden with a steak taped to your butt. Pah, you don’t see that on TV, do ya?
‘Sup Blad, me iz readin’ ya’ post wid’ eyes wide open yo’..Loved it, keep dancing and keep writing..I am trying to get another rap together for a contest lol ahahaa
You are in my top ten Entredrop award. Just gave you some linky love on my money blog.
Dancing to lose weight is a great idea, I’m an instructor so I can tell you that dancing is one of the most aerobic full body workouts you can give yourself… though I would highly suggest skipping the DVDs ^_^
Well, I just love running into you on a long day. Lots of laughs and helpful information. What’s that about steak on your rear?Does it work because I have 2 dogs. lol
As you know I love my treadmill, but I also like to dance. It’s fun for me so I don’t feel like I’m exercising
Uh, yeah…I’m not going to waste a perfectly good steak or get a dog just to starve it. Seriously y’all, can you even imagine how mad Sydney Cat would be if I got her a pet puppy and then was mean to it?
Yeah, I’d much rather be dancing freestyle, but it’s been so long since I’ve done anything that I need the DVDs to get me back in practice. Besides, I’ve never done any Latin dancing so if I can learn the moves, lose some weight and then take it to the club, well, that sure can’t be all bad.
