Devil in Your Hands
What better way to kick off The 13 days of love, dark passengers, than with a look at love at its finest: cheating.
Don’t get me wrong, I’m not a total cynic. I do believe in love; I believe love can work. Unfortunately, I also believe people are great at screwing up a good thing.
If they’re even looking for a good thing, that is…
For grins, let’s take a look at “The Feel Good Drag” by Anberlin. If you haven’t heard the song before then I highly recommend playing the original music video below so you’ll have some idea what I’m talking about…and it’s just an awesome song. (You know how I love a great guitar solo, right?)
…Continues below the music video…
So, what did you think? Apparently, the chick in the video was bathing in what had to be the filthiest water ever. Not really much of a story on the surface, but if you look at a more symbolic level then you’ll see a message and mini-moral unfolding.
Since there’s a theme running throughout the lyrics of feeling “in love with your sin” and that the other person is their their “littlest sin” and “greatest failure,” the bathtub imagery fits well. I’ve heard the expression black as sin and bathed in sin, but this really takes us to a whole new level, doesn’t it? What’s the moral? I’ll get to that in a second.
Here’s what I don’t get. Why do people bother to be in relationships if they’re just going to disrespect them anyway? Or better still…Why are so many incapable of separating love from lust? Any thoughts?
The reason I chose this particular song to highlight my point today, besides just the awesome evil baptism vanishing act, is the lyrics from the 3rd verse and the chorus:
Was this over before…before it ever began? Your kiss, your calls, your crutch…like the devil’s got your hands. This was over before…before it ever began. Your lips, your lies, your lust…like the devil’s in your hands.
Failure is your disease. You want my outline drawn. You were my greatest failure. Discourse your saving song!
–Lyrics to “The Feel Good Drag” by Anberlin
Seriously, how can you listen to that and not want to rock out to it on Rock Band 2? (Still waiting for it to be available…if it ever will be.) But I digress. Here’s the other thing about love: if you go looking for it in all the wrong places or for all the wrong reasons then you’re doomed to failure before success even has a shot. And, well…if you try to hook up with someone suffering from the failure disease then how could they possibly not end up being your greatest failure? (Also, it would appear the failure disease is fatal based on the [chalk] outline thing so…yeah. Take precautions.)
So in honor of Valentine’s Day and the 13 Days of Love, I leave you with the moral of this song’s story: He who picks up the failure disease chick (who’s already got a boyfriend) probably shouldn’t leave her alone in an old-fashioned, run down apartment while he rocks out with his friends next door. If he does…he should plan on having that relationship go down the drain.
And since you know I have to find a way to make everything amusing, I found two RuneScape fan-made music videos to this song for your viewing pleasure. This Runescape Music Video is probably the best one, but I found another that made me laugh my ass off every time the dude would throw magic up in the air at the end of verse/sentence/whatever. The best part of both of them are during the heavy guitar riffs when the little pixel peeps - especially the one in the viking hat - start playing air guitar. I can’t do it justice…you’ve got to watch to see what I’m talking about.
Looking for the lighter side of love? Don’t forget to check out The Stiletto Philosopher for a little love pick-me-up.

“Let your dark passenger come out to play…Be your own nemesis!”
BTW- Day 1 of the 13 Days of Love was delayed because a bunch of trojans took over my computer and had it shut down for way too long. (Last time I accept a giant wooden horse that’s left on my doorstep…bastards.) Took 5 hours just to get the virus scan to run all the way through. Day 2 of the 13 Days of Love will still be posted later today to keep us on schedule.

This song is too awesome! I have to listen to it at least 3 times a day! I’m checking out the other videos now.
Those were funny! I wonder why the first peep kept censoring out the word lust?
How much did you love the air guitar viking?
I don’t think the first peep was editing it out; I think the game edits out lust since kids play that game. I’m pretty sure every time you could see lust in the second vid the peep had gone back in and added it. There’s one part where you can see the word superimposed in front of the stars because the words were moving. (Maybe he was throwing magic in the air again…I dunno.)
Too funny…my re-captcha is “murdered in towne” Creepy…
The air guitar viking was awesome! ok, that makes sense then
Ya, the magic was awesome too. ewww…that is creepy! I’ve had some goofy ones…never creepy though!
Am I the only one who thinks its weird that they edited out the word lust while wizards are slicing each other with swords?
Sean - Nope, it does seem a little odd to me as well, but I guess they’re more worried about inappropriate conversations going on with minors (which I totally get) than they are with violence. At least it’s not terribly graphic. Fable 2 and Assassin’s Creed is way bloodier than RuneScape…I want to see an Assassin’s Creed music video.
Shinade - Thanks! I don’t know if I’ve ever been marked as a fave before.
haha…my reCaptcha is “Arouse contra” These things crack me up!
